The Heron

19 May

A Heron

Flies low over my house

Limbs tucked under

Wings beating ever so slowly and rhythmically

Neck outstretched

Focused on my dam

As if tired and relieved

On the last leg of a long journey

It spreads its wings wide

Glides gently in a smooth arc

Ripples onto the dam’s glasslike surface

Settles

And rests

A musician friend gave me half an old piano. He made an interesting table out of the other half.

I made these collages using stripped down elements from the hammer mechanism of the piano

Got nasty

When the heats on

“Look. heat is manageable. One of the things we do is spread our wings which helps you lose heat. You can open your beak and do some panting or gasping.  It also helps you keep cool.Something to do with the lungs. Never looked into it.  Some like to squat close to the ground. Scratch a bit of a hole to get the cooler soil. Its all pretty simple really. And then…well you’ve just got to soldier on. There are eggs to lay!”
